Spider under a branch => Urocoras sp.
« am: 2022-01-26 16:35:31 »
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Discovery date: January 26, 12 noon, sunny.
Habitat: 700 m - in an oak wood, in its small net under a large branch on the ground half covered by dry leaves. Wet habitat also due to the snow (now melted) of the last few days.
Dimensions: see photo.

Ciao,
I believe that this spider is an Amaurobius female.
I ask if it's an adult specimen and if it's possible to determine the species.

The spider is with me, if more details are needed.
I will release it in the next few days.

Thanks.
Raf

A really weird adult female Coelotinae (Agelenidae), doesn't match most of the Italian species so far. My suspect is Urocoras (munieri/matesianus, possibly latter). Can you catch me some mature specimens, preferably both sexes? Preferably several females.

Ciao Simeon, thanks.

Yes, it's Urocoras, but ... neither of the two species you mentioned.  ;)
I hope to update the thread in the future.

Greetings.

Hmm, what? An undescribed species awaiting description by Italian colleagues? Ok, I am curious :D .

Good morning.

Update (and small disappointment):
this resemble to be Urocoras matesianus, of the same type described by De Blauwe, not a specie nova.  :-\
But it would be opportune if I could find another specimen for definitive confirmation.

I wouldn't be disappointed by finding a species with an undescribed male; Urocoras matesianus is generally poorly known. Hope you find the male at some point. Urocoras longispina males are mature in autumn so maybe this is the case here as well? Only high mountain Coelotinae are mature mostly in summer.

Well, disappointment in the sense that
1. it's not the specie nova we thought it was,
2. U.m. is already known for Basilicata (province of Potenza),
3. it is not the longed-for male (but we are preparing an expedition to find it  ;)).
