Beitrag von: Raffaele Falato am 2022-05-16 22:45:08
Gorgoglione, Province of Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy.

Date of discovery: 13 May, 11 a.m.
Habitat: 700 m - near an abandoned building in an oak wood, hanging between two blades of tall grass.

Ciao,
is it possible to determine the species of this male Cyclosa?
Thanks.
Raf

Ciao Simeon,
after your reply I had a look at Cyclosa algerica (not given for Italy) on Pierre's site and on wiki. There is a ventral photo of a male with the presence of a single thorn on coxae IV highlighted.

My spider has two spines on coxae IV.

Not yet having access to UniBe and WSC  >:(, I googled for images showing the number of spines on coxae IV of the male sierrae.
There is a drawing right on UniBe that shows 2 spines.
So, if we stick to the algerica/sierrae complex, there is no doubt that my male is Cyclosa sierrae.

But conica also has two spines on coxae IV. Is this species out of the question because of the shape of the palpus?
