Eresus sp! Bosnien, 05.2011

Wow, that was a huge difference from the palps of E. kollari and E. sandaliatus. Naturally, I have no experience with this genus/family, but I have seen my share of malformed palps and in my experience they are never identical in one and the same specimen.

All the correct palpal parts seem to be there and I would suggest that it is not malformed. That means that this could be a new species, provided it is not one of those that SpiEu does not have illustrations of.

Do you have this article, it may shed some light on the question?: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1463-6409.2008.00328.x/full

Hope you find out what it is, Walter.

Hi, it must be noted, that I did not photograph the other palp, just threw a short look on it under bino. I will photograph that as well, or at least examine it closer. I am really interested about this specimen!!! Thanks for the comment.
I do not have the article, but I think someone in the forum must have it.

@Arno: hast Du auch Männchen von Bosnien? Kannst Du es fotografieren?

Yes, that publishing house requires an account and payment. I used my local library to obtain some papers published in Zoologica Scripta, that will probably work for you as well!

Walter, if you get your hands on a PDF-version of said paper, I wouldn´t mind a copy!

Regards,

Kjetil

P.S. I am waiting for a brand new microscope and digital camera, as soon as that arrives I´ll start on my Finnmark linyphiids as well as Martin´s specimens.

I think I will write to the authors of that article. Maybe they help. But I think that if E. moravicus had a so strikingly different pedipalp, it would have been described 100 years ago, not in 2008...

We also shall look at southern European species as well...

Entschuldigung nochmal. Ich zeige die wahre Palpen heute Abend!!!

Sorry, I mixed the palp photos and have shown the palps of Philaeus chrysops! I will show the real palps this evening!

Walter

Ah, that explains a lot, Walter. No wonder there was such a huge differences in palpal strcutures!

The new wonderful images fits better with Eresus-palps! I cannot offer more help here, I´m afraid, but I am sure the other members of this forum can. Wish we had this genus in Norway, though.

Looking at said paper I would say that this is Eresus moravicus Rezac 2008. But, as far as I understand, there may be other Eresus species in the area not mentioned in the paper?

I think we can rule out E. sandaliatus because of distribution (Western species), colouration (prominent white rings and red hind legs by my specimen).

We can rule out E. kollari because hind legs (not black distally by my specimen) and shape of conductor.

E. moravicus
seems to be an option, because hind legs are red, and conductor fits also. The description of this species states that 'The ventral side of the opisthosoma is black and only the branchial opercula have red hairs'. My specimen has a white area also, and the proximal red hair region is quite prominent, but otherwise it fits.

My specimen comes from a quite more South region than the other E. moravicus specimens mentioned in the article (260 km).

I think I will make a better photo of the conductor after removing the inner parts of the palp to be sure if it is E. moravicus or not.

Walter

PS: there are other species in the Balkan not mentioned in the paper, but those do not belong to this complex I think.

Good idea, Arno.

Look forward to see what comes out of this, it is both interesting and very useful if you can extend the distribution of E. moravicus.
